Livelihood

Rebuilding livelihoods and restarting economic activity is a critical component for disaster-affected families as they restart their lives. Without support for livelihoods or widespread economic recovery, the economy of a community remains reliant on handouts and can stagnate for years following a disaster. Helping families rebuild their livelihoods through short-term employment or longer-term vocational training, enables them to become proactive agents in control of their own recovery process.

Kaleela Umma Foundation has been supporting the livelihoods of the poorest people in the countries for over 06 years. We want people to be able to earn a living in a sustainable way, so they can feed their families. A large part of this work is ensuring that people have access to safe and nutritious food.

There are many reasons why a family can lose an income; illness or death of the breadwinner or the loss of land or livestock. KUF helps put families back on the road to a normal life. Through our training projects we teach young people skills like computing and welding. KUF provides families with farming and business advice as well as small, interest-free loans so that they can start to earn a living with dignity. It is often all it takes to help put an entire family back on the road to recovery.

We train those in need to grow their business, improve farming methods, and work together to form cooperatives. This helps parents become better providers for their children. And those children grow up better nourished, better educated, and better equipped to break the cycle of poverty.

Put simply, “livelihoods” does not just mean a person’s ability to earn a living, it’s about everything that has an impact on a person’s life. KUF livelihoods programmes target the poorest people. They have two core elements: providing food so people can survive and then enabling people to support themselves in the long-term.
